Why dogs get restless in the car – and what really helps.
Anyone who knows their dog knows this situation: as soon as the car door closes, the panting, pacing, and whining begin. The journey would be so pleasant – if the dog would just settle in.

There are dogs that sleep in the car. No matter how long the journey, no matter how winding the road – they curl up, close their eyes, and are gone. And then there are the others. The ones that can't find a moment's peace. The ones that run from window to window, push forward, panting as if it were their last day. The ones that leave you exhausted after two hours on the motorway – even though you've only been sitting.
The question of why dogs are so often restless in cars is not a trivial one. It has to do with physics, psychology, instinct – and with the simple fact that a dog sliding around on the back seat has no chance to relax. Not because it doesn't want to, but because it literally has no solid ground under its paws.
The balance problem
Dogs are not passengers. They weren't built to sit in a moving vehicle. Their balance system—the vestibular system in the inner ear—registers every curve, every braking maneuver, every bump in the road. What humans compensate for by looking at the road and consciously tensing their bodies is completely absent in a dog on the smooth back seat: It can't see where it's going. It can't hold on. And its body doesn't know what's coming next.
The result is a constant state of tension. The dog continuously activates its muscles to avoid slipping. This takes energy – and creates stress. Studies in animal physiology show that sustained balance stress in dogs triggers the same cortisol increase as moderate anxiety. The dog isn't in dramatic condition. It's exhausted.
"The dog isn't in serious trouble. He's exhausted – from a journey where he couldn't find a firm footing."
Anxiety or unease – and what is the difference?
Not every feeling of unease in the car is fear. This is an important distinction that is often overlooked in practice. Genuine fear of driving – triggered by traumatic experiences, motion sickness, or generalized anxiety disorder – is one thing. Discomfort due to a lack of support, disorientation, and physical exhaustion is another. Both manifest themselves similarly. The causes, and therefore the solutions, are different.
A dog sitting in a well-designed car seat for the first time – enclosed, elevated, with a forward-facing view – often shows significantly fewer stress symptoms after just a few trips. Not because it has been trained, but because its physical situation has fundamentally changed. It has support. It has orientation. Its body no longer has to constantly work to prevent slipping.

What a good car seat must be able to do
The answer sounds simple: A car seat for dogs must above all else – provide support. But what that means in practice is more complex than it seems.
First, the dog needs a defined lying area, which gently envelops him. Not tight, not constricting – but clearly defined. This gives the vestibular system a reference point. The body registers: I am somewhere. I don't need to search.
Secondly, the Padding is crucial. A hard or overly smooth surface increases slipping and therefore stress. A soft, slightly yielding seat, on the other hand, absorbs vibrations, dampens shocks, and allows the dog to adapt without having to actively work against it.
Thirdly – and this is often underestimated – the Seat height Visual orientation plays an important role. A dog sitting at window level, able to see the scenery, has a sense of direction. It can see where the vehicle is going. Its brain can interpret and process the vehicle's movement – just like a person looking out of a window who is therefore less prone to seasickness.
"Looking ahead changes everything. The dog stops searching – and starts traveling."

The problem with large dogs
Anyone who owns a large dog knows the disappointment: the market for dog car seats typically ends at around 8 to 12 kilograms. Above that weight, there are – if anything – transport boxes or safety harnesses, but hardly any actual seats. The unspoken message the market sends is clear: car comfort is reserved for small dogs.
From our perspective, this is unacceptable. The fundamental problem – lack of support, disorientation, and physical stress – affects large dogs just as much as small ones. A Weimaraner in the back seat suffers no less than a Chihuahua. It simply has fewer options to cope.
That's why we designed our car seats from the very beginning to be suitable for dogs up to... 35 kg Designed not as a niche product, but based on a fundamental belief: Anyone traveling with their dog – no matter how big – deserves a real solution. One that not only ensures safe transport, but also makes the journey in the car a calm and pleasant experience.

Long journeys – the real goal
Short trips to the vet are one thing. A four-hour drive on the motorway for vacation is another. Anyone who really wants to travel with their dog – not just transport them, but arrive together – needs a solution designed for long distances.
This means: a seat that not only stays put, but is so comfortable that the dog eventually stops searching and starts to sleep. One that's soft enough for hours of travel. One that's breathable enough for summer heat. And one that can be unfolded in a hotel room or vacation rental so the dog has its familiar spot there too – the same soft scent, the same shape, the same feeling of security.
Familiarity is comforting. Not just for dogs – but especially for dogs.
